The Elk Grove Village Plan Commission Wednesday night unanimously recommended approval of a special-use permit for a meat-processing plant in a vacant building.
The 80,000-square-foot facility at 2201 Estes Ave. would include 50,000 square feet devoted to meat processing and 30,000 square feet of warehouse space for dry-goods storage by a chain of three ethnic supermarkets on Chicago’s Northwest Side
The plant, which would operate 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., would employ between 30 and 50 workers and have up to 30 trucks per day bringing and delivering product.
The owner of the proposed plant, Belmont Sausage, said he expects to process 20,000 pounds of sausage, ham, bacon and lunchmeat each day.
Walter Mulica, owner of Wally’s Markets, said that if the plant is approved, refurbishment of the 30-year-old building could take six to eight months.
Mulica said he needs a larger facility to allow him to supply wholesalers as well as his retail outlets.
Mulica assured plan commissioners that the facility would not create any odors outside.
The Village Board may vote on the proposal Tuesday.
