Plans are under way for a new kindergarten center in Crete-Monee School District 201-U.

The response to all-day kindergarten was so successful that the pupils had to be selected by lottery for the 2000-01 school year, Curriculum Director Jean Wildermuth. In fact, there is a waiting list for the all-day classes.

“We think the all-day kindergarten program is ready to be implemented in another building,” Wildermuth said. The kindergarten advisory committee has looked at the Administration and Education Center, 1500 Sangamon St., as a possible site, Wildermuth said.

The committee will meet in September to discuss the plan for the beginning of the 2001 school year.

In the meantime, the Charter School is being housed in the building until its new site is completed on the Governors State University campus.

In addition to the academic curriculum, non-academic issues that needed attention this past year were the shuttles to and from each school.

Some children rode two different buses, one to their neighborhood school and one to the all-day school.

The all-day program was developed at Hickory School in University Park for 1999-2000.

Another all-day class will be held at Talala Elementary School in Park Forest in 2000-01. The additional cost for this class is about $3,000 in salary and $4,000 to $5,000 for furniture and material.
