I could not agree more with Steve Chapman’s “Perpetuating a useless dynasty” (Commentary, June 22) on how outdated and silly it is to maintain useless monarchs. When most of us have to prove ourselves every day and strive to become role models for our kids, the British dynasty excels in scandals, promiscuity and complete irrelevance.

As for Chapman’s question why Britain still tolerates monarchy, my theory is that, unfortunately, in the eyes of most Britons, the royal family seems to represent the only reminiscence of the “glorious” days of the British Empire. Maybe that’s the only way to distinguish Britain from the rest of the world.
