When is a picture of legs considered a photo of a person? Apparently when the person is disabled and one of his legs is prosthetic. Raoul Mowatt wrote a great piece covering the U.S. Independence Cup, a race for sailors with disabilities (Metro, Aug. 7). I am appalled at the choice of a photo that accompanied it–the faceless sailor (Andy Carlson of Lake Geneva, Wis.). It reinforces that those with disabilities are not people but only their disability.

Kudos to the Tribune for covering a great story on those with disabilities. Is it now time for some sensitivity training at the Trib?
