Early next month a very important decision will be made in Congress: the appropriation of funds for the cleanup and restoration of the Florida Everglades. This unique natural treasure, 100 miles of wilderness stretching from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay and encompassing Everglades National Park, should be fully preserved for the enjoyment of all. It is home to hundreds of bird species, diverse fauna and a large variety of fish. It has no parallel in the world and should be kept unspoiled for generations to come.
It would be unthinkable not to respond to a plea to restore Yellowstone or Yosemite should the need arise. Why, then, would we not do the same for the Everglades?
