Gunfire erupted near a West Side elementary school Friday, killing an 18-year-old Chicago man and disrupting afternoon dismissal, authorities said.

Police said Antonio Allen was sitting in a car at 2:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of South Springfield Avenue when another vehicle occupied by three men pulled up. One of the men got out of the car and fired a series of shots, striking Allen, police said.

Allen, of the 3000 block of West Arthington Street, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead about four hours later in Mt. Sinai Hospital Medical Center, a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner said.

Police spokesman Pat Camden said the shooting was gang-related.

Students at Penn Elementary School, 1616 S. Avers Ave., were shepherded back inside after the shots were heard. There were no reported injuries to the students, Chicago public schools chief Paul Vallas said.

Additional security guards, including off-duty Chicago police officers working for the school system, and counselors will be at the school on Monday, Vallas said.
