The implication from your “Closing the case on Whitewater” editorial and related cartoon on Sept. 24 are that the spending of $52 million was not worth the effort. To many of us it was well worth it, not to “torment Bill and Hillary” but to get at the truth and punish the guilty.
The same holds true for independent counsel Robert Ray pursuing Bill Clinton’s potential perjury, regardless of whether the public has the “appetite” for this “thoroughly unpleasant experience.” No crime is pleasant, and Bill Clinton should be treated no different than any other citizen. Let Mr. Ray pursue his responsibilities as he sees them. The public will be better served regardless of the outcome.
