I read the Oct. 1 and 2 articles on the Jerusalem riots. I found the incidents themselves quite disturbing, as I am a Jew with relatives in Israel. In addition, I feel more strongly about the continuation of the peace process after having spent two months this summer in Israel. I learned about the history of Judaism and Israel in great depth. In doing so, I became very aware of ancient and recent history of the Middle East.
The photographs chosen for the front-page articles greatly disturbed me because I know how Israel typically has received bad press around the world. Why does Chicago have to add to this when Israel tries so hard to improve its reputation?
The photographs depict the Israelis as armed aggressors and the Palestinians as unarmed innocent bystanders. Clearly one glance and the onlooker gains sympathy for the Palestinians and the wrong impression of the situation.
The Palestinians instigated the violence on the Jewish New Year on the holiest site in Judaism. Why is this not the headline?
I could go on about this point for pages, but I think my point is clear.
