I am writing in regard to the recent clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli soldiers. In viewing some of the photos and clips in the media, I am reminded of the brutal and excessive force displayed in South Africa during Apartheid.
Moreover, the indiscriminate firing on the part of Israeli soldiers displays Israel’s lack of respect and disregard for Palestinian life.
The Israeli administration’s failure to address these injustices indicates that these are not isolated incidents–but national policy.
Judging from the recent events that have taken place in Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories, it is thoroughly evident that the Palestinian claim to portions of Jerusalem cannot be ignored. Moreover, the Palestinian claim to Jerusalem is just as valid as the Israeli claim.
Therefore I ask the American people and administration to support a policy of equality and mutuality for both Palestinians and Israelis as we move forward in final status negotiations.
