Tobacco lawsuit: Atty. Gen. Janet Reno appealed to Congress for $23 million Thursday to continue the government’s massive lawsuit against the tobacco industry. The civil lawsuit could force the industry to relinquish billions of dollars in profits earned since 1954. The government claims the industry misled the government and the public about the addictiveness of nicotine and whether its marketing targeted children. The industry has denied the claims.
