David Phillip Broude, 86, whose career at a chain of Chicago-area women’s clothing stores spanned more than half a century, died of heart failure after a long illness Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Highland Park Hospital. Mr. Broude attended Harrison High School and Northwestern University before marrying his first wife, Rose. In the 1930s, Mr. Broude went to work for his brother-in-law’s retail business, Mayfields, which later became Miss Mayfield. He eventually became the owner. He retired in 1980. Outside of his career, Mr. Broude helped found Congregation Shaare Tikvah in Chicago and sang in the choir there for 35 years, his family said. Mr. Broude remarried in 1961. He often participated in events at the Lutheran church of his wife, Evelyn, as a way to foster tolerance, his family said. “He had such an ecumenical spirit,” said his stepdaughter, Sandy Britton. For more than half a century, Mr. Broude enjoyed playing handball at the Irving Park YMCA and was a city and state champion of singles and doubles handball tournaments, his family said. In addition to his wife of 39 years and his stepdaughter, Mr. Broude is survived by two sons, Franklyn and Alexander; two brothers; Samuel and Bernard; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be private.
