Judging from their coverage of the Olympics in Sydney, its seemed to me as if the sportswriters you sent to the Games would rather have been somewhere else.

A case in point: Rick Morrissey’s Sept. 28 column, “Gold-medal yawn greets baseball title.” Apparently Morrissey was down on the U.S. baseball team for celebrating its victory over the Cubans. Hey, the Americans won the gold medal! They beat the team that has owned the event–why not celebrate?

Except for the usually classy Fred Mitchell, your sports staff wore their cynicism like a badge of honor. If they gave out medals for cynicism in Olympic coverage, your paper would win the gold.
