Kudos to Barbara Brotman for being enthusiastically involved in her children’s consumption of popular culture (“I want my MTV for family unity,” WomanNews, Sept. 27). With so many parents busy with work, soccer schedules or whatever takes up their too-scarce spare time, too many are depending on teachers, librarians, the Motion Picture Association of America or the government to keep their children from watching, reading or listening to the things they find objectionable.
Bravo to Ms. Brotman for taking the time and energy to watch the MTV awards with her daughters and discuss with them the parts she found offensive, and to admit her own occasional strayings from her philosophical opposition to misogynistic, racist or intolerant materials (her fondness for the Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb”). I’m sure her daughters learned much more from her open-mindedness and her honesty than they would have learned from being prohibited point-blank from viewing the awards, or worse, from being left without parental guidance.
