About 100 gun locks distributed to the public in Lake Villa have been recalled because some of them opened when slammed on the ground, officials said.

Jim McDonald, Lake Villa trustee and chairman of the Public Safety Committee, last week announced a recall made by the Cook County sheriff’s office on gun locks issued by Project HomeSafe.

“The gun locks were tested by slamming them on the ground, and it seems two out of four were opening up,” McDonald said.

Project HomeSafe distributed the locks to the public during the Lake Villa Safety Fair in May, said Lake Villa Police Chief Roger Visconti.

“We haven’t had any calls yet, and I don’t anticipate any problem because the lock can only be utilized if the gun is unloaded,” Visconti said.

Lake Villa Police Sgt. Gary Thommes said the project is sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

“Let’s correct any problems,” Thommes said. “The company hasn’t done anything wrong. We have brought gun awareness to light. If someone wants something bad enough, they are going to get it. This [lock] is a deterrent.”
