Waukegan city planners have discovered a glitch in the city’s official plat of survey that identifies much of South Sheridan Road as South Genesee Street.
The error was discovered recently when a cellular telephone company submitted a proposal to build a cell tower on the east side of South Sheridan Road north of 10th Street, the city’s southern border with North Chicago.
Examination of the city’s official map revealed that the west side of South Sheridan Road from the Amstutz Expressway south to 10th Street is labeled “South Genesee Street (Sheridan Road),” said John Jurkovac, a Waukegan city planner. The east side of the street is properly labeled.
“It’s pretty confusing,” Jurkovac said after the error was discovered. “We don’t know how long it’s been like that. We’re trying to get a clear understanding of how it happened.”
The homes and businesses along the west side of South Sheridan Road will not have to change their addresses to South Genesee Street, Jurkovac said. The error will likely be rectified by City Council action.
