The key issue in the presidential campaign this year is simple: It’s trust. If you trust government, and especially the government in Washington, to know what is best for you, then you should vote for Al Gore. If, on the other hand, you think people know what is best for themselves, if you think we should trust people to decide things for themselves, then George W. Bush is your candidate.
Look at the candidates’ tax proposals. Vice President Gore says he will cut your taxes, but what he wants to give you are targeted tax cuts and tax credits. This means if you do what the government wants you to do and if you do it in the way the government wants you to do it, you will get tax relief. But if you want to do something differently, if you want to do it your way, not the federal government’s way, then you will get nothing.
Gov. Bush disagrees with this approach. He wants to cut your taxes and let you decide how to spend your money because, unlike Vice President Gore, he trusts you to know what is best for you.
