About 270 Ameritech customers in Buffalo Grove were left without telephone service early Monday when water seeped into a manhole and damaged a cable near Buffalo Grove and Dundee Roads, authorities said.

Ameritech technicians said the outage was reported about 2:15 a.m. Monday, and Ameritech and Buffalo Grove spokeswomen said all customers affected should have telephone service restored by Tuesday, at the latest.

“Thank goodness this wasn’t as bad as the last [phone outage],” said Buffalo Grove’s Assistant Village Manager Ghida Sahyouni, referring to an Oct. 12 incident in which up to 2,000 Ameritech customers in Buffalo Grove and Wheeling lost service after construction workers cut a cable on Dundee Road.

Buffalo Grove Police Cmdr. Peter Lippert said customers affected by the latest outage were in an area bounded by Arlington Heights, Lake-Cook, Buffalo Grove, and Dundee Roads. An unrelated power outage left about 1,400 Buffalo Grove residents without electricity Monday morning for about 45 minutes, he said.

The eastbound inside lane of Dundee Road was closed near Buffalo Grove Road, as was Dundee’s westbound left-turn lane while Ameritech employees worked to restore phone service, Lippert said.

A temporary telephone bank was installed Monday in the Alcott Center, 530 Bernard Drive, officials said.
