After reading about John Paul Penry, condemned for raping and fatally stabbing Pamela Carpenter while on parole for another crime, I read two letters on Nov. 17. He should consider that had Carpenter possessed a gun, perhaps she could have defended herself against the armed criminal, saved her life, and we would not now be debating Penry’s fate.
