About 3,000 people gathered Sunday in Marseille for a barbecue organized by the city’s butchers, who handed out free beef to boost consumer confidence amid growing worries about mad cow disease.
About 50 butchers distributed 3.6 tons of beef to meat lovers in Marseille, who wandered between stands and piled kebabs and dripping slabs of rare roast onto plates.
“We told people that, when it comes to safe beef, . . . they can have confidence in their butcher,” said Joseph Emmanuel Mordiconi, the butcher who organized the event.
Public fears about the dangers of eating beef reached panic levels last month when it was discovered that potentially infected meat had made it to supermarket shelves.
