The developer of a controversial subdivision in Cary has decided to redraw his proposal rather than have the six village trustees vote against his annexation request for the 44-acre parcel.
Brian Harris, president of Westfield Development, urged board members Tuesday night not to vote so he could try to change the proposal enough to sway them toward a positive vote.
Harris’ plan called for 50 single-family homes and 89 town homes across the street from Lions Park on Silver Lake Road. The land is north of Cary’s Brittany Woods subdivision and south of the Silver Lake subdivision in Algonquin Township. More than 250 residents from both developments signed a petition objecting to the density of the proposal.
During the board’s discussion, several trustees said a proposed road that would connect Hawthorn Drive in the Silver Lake subdivision would be unsafe, since the Hawthorn Drive is a narrow, hilly street with no sidewalks.
Trustees also said they wanted to see the impact of two large residential communities that were approved several months ago before they consider another one in the village. The Foxford Hills and Cambria developments will add 848 single-family homes and multifamily buildings to the village.
Westfield’s 139 units would bring an estimated 384 new residents to Cary and an additional 82 children into schools.
“It’s too bad you weren’t here 15 years ago when Cary was begging for residential development,” said Trustee Steve Lamal.
Trustee Tom Vieweg said if the development was not annexed into Cary and remained in Algonquin Township, Harris could build about 70 homes on the land. He suggested that Harris reduce the number of homes to around that.
