I was pleased to see that the beautiful poem, “The Mother,” was among the selections of Gwendolyn Brooks’ works you chose to print in your tribute to the Illinois poet laureate (Commentary, Dec. 5). It is quite amazing to think that Ms. Brooks wrote that poem nearly 30 years before abortion was a political topic in America, yet it is a timeless sentiment.
Gwendolyn Brooks had a real gift in her ability to express profound human emotions in such understandable terms.
“The Mother” reminds us that abortion is always a tragedy, whether you believe in the right to choose abortion or you do not. In abortion a life is always lost.
Gwendolyn Brooks’ life has certainly been a gift to humanity.
