Wisconsin wide receiver Nick Davis was suspended Friday for the Badgers’ Sun Bowl game in El Paso, Texas, after pleading guilty to stealing a television from an electronics store.
After entering into a plea agreement with prosecutors, Davis was found guilty of misdemeanor retail theft in Dane County Circuit Court and placed on probation for two years.
He also must pay a $3,800 fine, according to Dane County District Attorney Brian Brophy.
Davis, 21, was originally charged Monday with felony retail theft after a friend allegedly helped him steal a $4,000 television from Best Buy.
Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez said Davis, a junior, will remain on scholarship and will continue to play for the Badgers.
– Gary Patterson, Texas Christian’s defensive coordinator the last three seasons, was named to replace Dennis Franchione as head coach.
Patterson’s appointment comes a week after Franchione accepted an offer to become Alabama’s new coach.
Patterson said the team voted to have Franchione coach the it in the Mobile Alabama Bowl.
– Colorado coach Gary Barnett, despite a 3-8 record this season, was given a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the school through the 2005 season.
– Arkansas fullback Adam Daily will miss this month’s Las Vegas Bowl because of a spinal-cord problem.
– Valdosta State junior Dusty Bonner, the former Kentucky quarterback who set a Division II single-season mark with 54 touchdown passes, won the Harlon Hill Trophy as the top player in Division II.
