A classmate invited me to spend Christmas at her home in Gloversville, N.Y. Our train from Chicago was filled with servicemen on leave. We arrived in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Snow fell softly as we walked to my first midnight mass.
We had two Christmas dinners–the Van Slyke family served turkey with oyster stuffing. My hosts, the Lebowich family, served beef stroganoff. The Di Traglia boys took us to the ice skating rink.
December 1944. The heavenly peace of Gloversville masked the Battle of the Bulge being fought in Europe.
