City rules mandate that taxi drivers go into dangerous areas. I am not a cab driver nor do I even know one, but it seems that it is not reasonable that the city forces cab drivers to venture into areas that they deem unsafe. They are unprotected and most times are alone.
Police officers go into unsafe areas. But they are armed. They usually have a companion and/or a backup. Police officers with seniority even have the option to choose their own shifts, or at least avoid the dangerous shifts. When a police officer dies in the line of duty, he is a hero (and rightly so) and has an official funeral, and his badge gets retired. When a taxi driver dies in the line of duty, it seems to be: “Ho hum, another cabbie died.” Maybe the taxi regulations should be reconsidered.
