Lois Stone, 73, of Skokie, a retired elementary school teacher, died Friday, Dec. 29, at North Shore Medical Center in Skokie of bone cancer. “She was very outgoing, charming and sociable,” said her daughter Linda O’Brien. “And she was a natural leader, and any organization she joined she rose to the top.” Mrs. Stone was born and raised in Cleveland. After graduating from that University of Miami of Ohio and moving to the Chicago area, she turned to elementary teaching so she could work but still be available to her three young daughters when they were home from school. A 4th- and 5th-grade teacher, Mrs. Stone taught for a few years in Chicago, then moved to the Skokie area, where she taught for almost three decades in Skokie School District 73 1/2. “She was a natural teacher–patient, creative and artistic,” O’Brien said. Mrs. Stone also wrote poetry and short stories. After retiring five years ago from teaching, she became an active member of the National Council of Jewish Women. “She was very giving and just never stopped,” her daughter said. “She had so much energy.” Even after cancer was diagnosed two years ago she volunteered at the agency’s Howard Street thrift shop. Mrs. Stone also was a past president of the B’nai B’rith organization. He daughter said she loved to travel. Other survivors include daughters Carol Anderson and Nina Stone and three grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Piser Chapel, 9200 N. Skokie Blvd., Skokie.
