“A first-rate team for Bush” (Editorial, Jan. 4) lauds the diversity of Bush’s proposed cabinet, even pointing out Linda Chavez’s distinction as a Hispanic woman.
I am sure Ms. Chavez would be the first to object to being so identified by her ethnicity.
Surely the Tribune’s editorial board is well aware of Ms. Chavez’s views on ethnic identity in America.
Her reactionary columns attacking affirmative action, bilingual education and immigration have appeared regularly on the Tribune’s Commentary page.
Surely Ms. Chavez will not want us to think that she was chosen to round out the color spectrum of the Bush cabinet.
Thus, in the interest of setting the record straight:
Linda Chavez would not be “one of the highest-ranking Hispanic women” to serve in a cabinet.
She would be an anti-affirmative action, anti-immigrant, anti-labor labor secretary.
