Benjamin E. Banks Jr., 88, a resident of Lombard since 1977, was a retired employee of GTE Corp. and a onetime head of maintenance for the former Madigan’s department store at Yorktown Shopping Center in Lombard. He died Sunday, Jan. 7, in DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton. Mr. Banks was born in Chicago, and he served in the Army during World War II. His wife, Anita, said that Mr. Banks was a quiet man and that he was very handy and fond of gardening, motion pictures and theater. “We had season tickets to Drury Lane, which he enjoyed very much,” she said. She added that Mr. Banks was a past commander of the American Legion post in Lombard and had been active in the the Knights of Columbus and at Christ the King Church in Lombard. “He also served Communion at Lexington Health Care Center in Lombard,” she said. Other survivors include two daughters, Sheila Brydiger and Catherine Ingram; a stepson, Paul Kondrat; a stepdaughter, Alyce Kondrat; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. A mass will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday in Christ the King Catholic Church, 1501 S. Main St., Lombard.
