Joseph S. Scurto, 79, a Clarendon Hills resident since 1967 and a sportsman and retired operating engineer, died Sunday, Jan. 14, in Chateau Village in Willowbrook. Mr. Scurto worked at Oak Forest Hospital from 1970 to 1991. He was born in Melrose Park. He served in the Army during World War II, participating in several major campaigns in the Pacific and being among the first troops to land in Japan after the war ended. “He loved the harness horses and owned several that raced at Maywood Park and Sportsman’s Park,” said his wife, Patricia. “He passed on the love of horses to his son.” She said her husband also loved golf and travel, “taking cruises and later bus trips.” Other survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Black; two sons, Joseph Jr. and James; a sister, Rose Busch; and eight grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Modell Funeral Home, 7710 S. Cass Ave., Darien.
