I write to second the points made by Dennis Byrne in his column “Now Democrats see the problem with immigration (Commentary, Jan. 15). In his comments on U.S. immigration policy, Mr. Byrne transcends the diversionary issues of race and ethnicity and cuts to the facts and reality surrounding the current wave of overimmigration into the U.S.: the quiet raising of immigration quotas for political gain, one of the world’s higher rates of population growth, environmental degradation, and an overwhelmed social and transportation infrastructure.
Our capacity to assimilate immigrants is limited. Mr. Byrne points out the numerous and clear signals that this capacity has been greatly exceeded.
