For the sake of fairness and correctness, it needs to be pointed out that Donna Barrie’s Jan. 16 letter is incorrect. She states, “By majority vote, the people elected Al Gore.”
First of all, it is hard for either candidate to get a majority vote of the people when nearly half don’t even vote.
Second, even those who did vote did not select a majority winner. Al Gore did receive more votes, but it was a plurality of the votes cast.
Last, we vote for electors in our individual states to cast electoral votes for president of the entire country. Here, George W. Bush won a majority of the votes and is the president-elect, not the president-select.
