Weddings are an ever-ready source of Hollywood hilarity — or even horror (you can decide for yourself which category “The Wedding Planner,” the Jennifer Lopez movie that opened Friday, falls into). Here are some of Hollywood’s more famous forays down the aisle:
– “Bride of Frankenstein,” 1935: Elsa Lanchester is a scream in the title role. A classic.
– “Father of the Bride,” 1991: Steve Martin is the dad of a cutesy-poo daughter who marries an even cuter boy. Hollywood doesn’t make ’em any slicker — or less realistic –than this.
– “I Was a Male War Bride,” 1949: Cary Grant is delight in this cross-dressing post-war comedy.
– “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” 1997: Julia Roberts was supposed to be entertaining in this forced, schizophrenic “comedy” as a jealous friend who tries to wreck Dermot Mulrony’s wedding. Ha ha.
– “The Princess Bride,” 1987: A supposedly winsome film about a pretty princess who’s rescued from marrying yucky Humperdinck. It’s mildly entertaining, but why this is a cult favorite remains a mystery.
– “Runaway Bride,” 1999: Julia Roberts was supposed to be charming in this film as a woman who can’t commit and repeatedly flees the altar. Ha ha.
– “The Wedding Singer,” 1998: Drew Barrymore mugged her way through this entertaining comedy, but Adam Sandler stole the show with his performance as a sensitive bridal balladeer.
