Tiznow, who had started only once when Fusaichi Pegasus raced to Kentucky Derby glory in the spring, turned in a Classic fall performance that made him Horse of the Year.
The bay colt, trained by Jay Robbins, clinched both Horse of the Year and an Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old colt or gelding by winning the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs. He had four wins and three seconds in eight starts in 2000.
Olympics: Twenty-nine years after swimmer Rick DeMont was stripped of an Olympic gold medal for using an asthma medication containing a banned substance, the U.S. Olympic Committee will clear his name, DeMont’s lawyer, David Ulich, said. DeMont, 44, is now an assistant swimming coach at the University of Arizona.
Baseball: Third baseman David Bell, who had filed for salary arbitration, signed a one-year contract with Seattle. Bell was seeking $2.65 million; the Mariners were offering $1.85 million.
