It is amusing that Studs Terkel is concerned about his alma mater’s seeming lack of shame regarding the University of Chicago Law School’s support for John Ashcroft’s nomination as attorney general.
It would be comforting to read a similar piece from the revered historian expressing disdain for the shameless behavior exhibited during Mr. Bill Clinton’s tenure in office and magnified during his overdue exit.
Not only were some of his last-minute pardons and executive orders questionable, but they also elicited serious concern from liberal and conservative wings of both parties as to the justification and motivation of these unexplained actions.
Then came word of certain acts of vandalism and indecency left behind by Clinton staffers in various administration offices, not to mention the alleged pilfering of presidential artifacts taken from the government plane transporting Mr. and Mrs. Clinton to New York.
These acts are certainly devoid of the civility and decency which Mr. Terkel asserts Dubya’s choice for attorney general lacks.
I’d much rather take my chances with Mr. Ashcroft than with any of the Clinton-misled cronies now thankfully out of office.
