Studs Terkel’s comments in Voice of the people were confusing. He was talking about being civil but referred to President Bush as “Dubya.” That was rather uncivil. Also his conclusions were incongruous.
He admires Professor Emeritus Bernard Meltzer of the University of Chicago Law School, who said, “It is a happy combination of people who disagree with civility and teach each other to take another look at their arguments.”
Yet, because John Ashcroft has a different view about gay rights, gun control, affirmative action and abortion, he says that he is uncivil.
Please, Mr. Terkel.
Give our new administration credit for a little intelligence and “take a look at their arguments.” Look behind your own rhetoric and see the truth. “Women’s right” and “choice” are euphemisms. A dead, mutilated baby and an emotionally and physically scarred woman are the facts.
