The demise of WNIB is a loss for Chicago.
Having driven to and from work for nearly 26 years now, there were always a few constants I could look forward to on the radio during drive time. Slowly but surely, each of my favorite radio stations has changed formats with the times.
But the demise of WNIB as a classical format is different. Classical music in its various forms has been around for hundreds of years; it’s not some passing fancy. Over time, I have been soothed and educated in this art form while driving my many miles.
Yes, WFMT is around as an alternative, but WNIB always took a lighter road to the presentation of classical music. Alas, why can’t WNIB’s new owners continue the fine tradition of broadcasting the works of Beethoven, Handel, Mozart and others as both a civic obligation and important educational tool?
Unfortunately I regret that the $165 million purchase is not likely to motivate the new owners to perpetuate classical music on the radio.
So as I drive my daughter to school each morning, she will now only have a single choice when listening to classical music. I hope that we will always have at least one choice in classical music on the radio.
So long, WNIB; we will miss you!
