Federal investigators combed through the wreckage Thursday of a single-engine plane crash that killed a popular Minnesota flight instructor, a student pilot and their wives after a Valentine’s Day dinner.
The victims, all from Minnesota, were about a mile from Voyager Village, a resort with a private airstrip, when the plane clipped trees and nose-dived through power lines before crashing.
Killed were Joe and Julie Paar of Forest Lake, Minn., and Steve and Jayne Dumas of rural Lake Elmo, Minn.
Flight instructor Joe Paar, 37, was known as one of the top pilots in his flying club, said Phil Mattison, president of Club Cherokee. Steve Dumas, 36, was a student pilot. Both were members of the club.
“I don’t know what happened. None of it makes sense to me,” Mattison said.
