Renewed interest in a quilting method called Redwork has inspired the theme of the fifth annual Old-Fashioned Quilt Show scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Naper Settlement.
The show allows visitors to view 20 quilts from the Settlement collection, including the featured Redwork quilt embroidered by Naperville quilters in 1896.
True to the style, it includes designs like birds, cherubs and historical scenes, stitched in red thread on muslin squares. For one cent, quilters would buy a muslin square stamped with a pattern, stitch the pattern and then gather to assemble the squares.
There will be demonstrations of Redwork on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon, and on Sunday, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Other lectures, demonstrations and appraisals will be held throughout the event.
The Settlement will also display more than 50 quilts on loan from area residents.
The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8, $7 for seniors and $5 for children 4 and up.
