The article “Peaceful apes can’t escape Congo’s war” (Page 1, Feb. 9) caught my attention for one reason: the gruesome slaughtering of bonobos.

These peaceful creatures are frequently being hunted for their meat, which by many is considered a delicacy.

This, in turn, will eventually lead the bonobo species into extinction.

Kudos to Friends of the Animals of Congo and all others who dedicate their precious time and talent to help preserve these and other animals near extinction. It is important that we sustain the Earth’s natural wildlife.

When will chief precursors, who are so concerned with other worldly issues, such as the chaos of combat, realize that a mammoth-size war is being waged against faultless creatures on a daily basis?

Forlornly, with each death of an innocent animal, it is evident that this horrific battle is surely being lost.
