William J. Dietzler, 75, a retired railroad engineer, died Sunday, Feb. 18, in his Itasca home. Mr. Dietzler joined the Soo Line Railroad shortly after his discharge from the Marines following service in World War II. He worked almost exclusively the night shift, moving freight into Chicago from the company’s Schiller Park yard, said his son Ronald. Mr. Dietzler retired in 1988. “He was very big into gardening, growing vegetables and fruit on his half-acre plot,” his son said. “Some were for consumption and some for canning.” Other survivors include his wife, Irene; three other sons, Allan, Paul and Earl; a daughter, Janice Berberich; and six grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Oaks Funeral Home, 1201 E. Irving Park Rd., Itasca. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with mass said at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 524 N. Rush St., Itasca.
