I was shocked by Lisa Black’s “New Trier students tell of intolerance among their peers” (Metro, Feb. 22). I was shocked that anyone would find this to be news.
Of course New Trier students are intolerant. The majority of their lives have been spent living among people very similar to themselves (affluent and white).
Regardless of the field trips to the city or the cultural exchanges, at the end of the day, these kids return to a covertly intolerant enclave.
Do the people of exclusive North Shore communities teach intolerance? Of course not–it’s much worse than that. They exclude people by putting up economic barriers that keep other groups from joining their little club.
It’s easy to be tolerant when you live among people who are virtually the same. But the really pathetic thing is they’ve found a way to be intolerant even among themselves.
