Travelers spent almost $10 billion in Wisconsin last year, a 9.8 percent increase from 1999, according to a study by the state Department of Tourism.

Tourists spent the most money in Milwaukee County, $1.5 billion, followed by Dane, Sauk, Waukesha and Door counties. Traveler spending in 2000 capped a 48.9 percent increase during the last five years, according to the report, which was prepared for release Tuesday.

Tourism dollars supported 282,960 full-time jobs and stimulated $5.6 billion in income for Wisconsin residents, the report found.

“A strong economy and increased marketing of our brand image contributed to a banner year,” Tourism Secretary Moose Speros said.
