As an avid bicyclist and a bicycling activist, I was aghast to see the photo on the front page of the May 9 Healthy Living special section–are you not aware that the most healthy thing you can do on a bicycle is to wear a helmet? There is absolutely no excuse for an article that purports to focus on good health habits to be accompanied by a picture of a person riding a bike without wearing an approved safety helmet.

There is a vast body of research that indicates conclusively that wearing a helmet saves lives and prevents injuries from being more serious than without doing so. Accidents happen in one’s own driveway, at slow speeds and to all categories of riders.
