Notre Dame forced a seventh game in the South Bend (Ind.) NCAA baseball regional Monday, but the Irish saw their season end later in the day.
William Collazo pitched six innings of relief to lead Florida International to a 5-4 win in Game 7.
The Golden Panthers advance to play Southern Cal in a three-game series in Los Angeles this weekend, with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Omaha June 8-16.
Collazo (13-0) held the Irish to two runs and seven hits over the final six innings. The third-team All-American struck out Irish third baseman Andrew Bushey with the tying run on third base and two outs in the ninth inning.
Notre Dame (49-13-1) jumped ahead with Brian Stavisky’s two-run homer in the top of the first. The Golden Panthers got that lead back in the bottom of the third, touching Irish starter J.P. Gagne (5-5) for four runs on four hits and a walk.
In Game 6, Peter Ogilvie (5-1) pitched a complete game to lead the Irish to a 5-2 victory. The Stevenson graduate allowed nine hits, struck out five and walked two. Steve Sollmann hit a two-run triple in the third and catcher Paul O’Toole hit a solo homer to right in the eighth.
Also, Rice beat Baylor 5-4 in the Houston regional.
– Lindsey Collins homered in the fourth inning and Jennie Finch pitched a four-hitter as Arizona beat UCLA 1-0 in the championship game of the women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Finch (32-0) struck out seven and walked two to finish her perfect season and break the NCAA record for wins in a season without a defeat. She was named the series’ most outstanding player.
The top-seeded Wildcats (65-4) won their sixth national championship, second only to UCLA’s eight. For the Bruins (62-6), four of their losses this season came to Arizona.
– Matias Boeker of Georgia became the third player to sweep the NCAA men’s tennis titles.
Boeker, part of the team championship last week, won the singles and doubles titles in Athens, Ga., to join Stanford’s Alex O’Brien (1992) and Bob Bryan (1998) as the only players to win all three titles since the current format was adopted in 1977.
Boeker beat Virginia’s Brian Vahaly 6-2, 6-4 to take the singles title, then teamed with Travis Parrott to defeat SMU’s Johan Brunstrom and Jon Wallmark 6-4, 7-5.
“This is a dream come true for me,” said Boeker, a sophomore from Buenos Aires.
– After Princeton blew a four-goal lead, B.J. Prager’s goal with 41 seconds left in overtime gave the Tigers a 10-9 win over Syracuse in the NCAA lacrosse championship game at Piscataway, N.J.
In winning its sixth NCAA title with its fourth overtime victory in the finals, Princeton (14-1) denied Syracuse (13-3) a chance to become the first team to win eight national championships. Tigers coach Bill Tierney equaled former Syracuse coach Roy Simmons’ record with six NCAA crowns.
