The Republican Party has only itself to blame for Vermont Sen. James Jeffords’ leaving to become an independent. After campaigning as a moderate, George W. Bush ascended to the presidency on the wings of a Florida butterfly ballot and a 5-4 Supreme Court decision, but since moving into the White House, Bush has proposed policies leaning too far to the right. He barely won the election, even lost the popular vote, but acts like a president who received a mandate from the electorate.

I salute Sen. Jeffords for his courage, convictions and independence. Perhaps Jeffords’ move will encourage more independent thinking, enhance bipartisanship and force President Bush to work more closely with the opposition.
