Regarding Steve Chapman’s “Time to end the Strom Thurmond charade” (Commentary, May 27), I could not agree more. I am a staunch Republican who lived in South Carolina for 20 years. I have to admit that I voted for him the last time I voted in South Carolina (1990). I could not bring myself to vote for his opponent.
One of the many rumors that the voters of South Carolina hear as to why Strom continues is that he has a continuous feud with former South Carolina Gov. Carroll Campbell. According to some people, Campbell, a Republican Party loyalist, is in line to gain a stronghold, or Strom-hold, over the seat, once it is relinquished. But Strom has such a grudge that he will block Campbell with his very last breath.
Before Strom goes on living for another 10 years, he should honorably surrender his stranglehold on the seat–allow the Republican Party to nominate a candidate of Campbell’s ability in the next Senate race to represent the people of South Carolina. South Carolina voters deserve better representation.
