Winning stuff
Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves joined a select group of major-league pitchers when he won his 250th game on July 5. Maddux is the 15th pitcher since 1950 to earn 250 victories. Among active pitchers, only Roger Clemens of the New York Yankees has more. Since 1950, there have been more than 3,600 pitching debuts in the majors, but just 15 of those hurlers went on to win 250.
Around the horn
Members of the Mariners received more than 14 million All-Star votes; the next highest team vote total was for the Indians at 6.8 million. … The Twins drew 1,039,911 fans before the All-Star break this season; last year, their full-season total was just 19,804 more than that. … Jimy Williams is the first Red Sox manager since Don Zimmer (1976-80) to win at least 400 games with the team. … At the break, All-Star pitcher Mike Hampton of the Rockies was batting .311, which was higher than 14 All-Star position players including Cal Ripken (.229), Mike Piazza (.269), Jeff Kent (.289), Derek Jeter (.292), Ivan Rodriguez (.295), Barry Bonds (.307) and Edgar Martinez (.305).
