I had to chuckle when I saw the picture of George Bush with the Pope, who advised him to oppose stem cell research, an issue which I take very seriously (Page 1, July 24).

I’m just old enough to remember when John Kennedy was running for president. The Republican concern then was that a Catholic president would undermine the separation of church and state, and the pope would dictate our government’s policy.

When did their concern become their desire?
