Why do pundits and columnists find the tax rebate checks currently being mailed out so insignificant?

I have heard many reports, from news radio stations in Chicago to national cable stations like CNN, ridicule the amount of the rebate checks.

Since when is $600 an insignificant amount of money to today’s working families? Kids are going back to school in a few weeks and $600 can go a long way toward purchasing clothes and supplies.

Air conditioners have been running non-stop for most of July and $600 can go a long way toward paying that utility bill.

I’m sure people have already thought up a number of ways to spend their tax rebate.

I thought the politicians, not the almighty media, were supposed to be out of touch with the public.
