Roy D. Chapin Jr., former chief executive of American Motors Corp., has died of heart failure at age 85. It was in his tenure, in 1970, that AMC bought Jeep Corp. from Kaiser Industries. Chapin was CEO from 1967 and 1977 and remained on AMC’s board of directors until Chrysler Corp. bought AMC in 1987.
