Complaints about problems with gearshifts in Jeep Grand Cherokees have ballooned since the federal government been investigating the SUV. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a probe in July with at least 48 complaints about Grand Cherokees inadvertently shifting from park into reverse and rolling away. The agency has 144 complaints, including one fatality. The Los Angeles Times, relying on police records and court documents, has reported two other deaths related to the problem. The NHTSA investigation covers 1.3 million 1995 through 1999 model Grand Cherokees.
